Treatment for AMD

In the case of dry AMD, the treatments suggested are done so with the aim of slowing the progression, since we cannot reverse retinal damage. This can include things such as supplementing with AREDs-2 vitamins, or in more severe wet AMD cases, eye injections.

Geographic atrophy (GA) is an advanced form of AMD that causes retinal cell loss, leading to blind spots in central vision and difficulty with reading, driving, and recognizing faces. There are new FDA approved intravitreal medications that have been found to help slow down the progression of GA from worsening and affecting vision. This is done by a retinal specialist.

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a promising new therapeutic method being studied for treating dry macular degeneration (AMD). Its action is based on using low-energy light emitted in the red and near-infrared range, allowing retinal tissue penetration and modulation of metabolic processes in the mitochondria. It promotes increased adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production which, in turn, promotes regeneration and protection of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells while reducing the effects of oxidative stress.

Wet AMD can be treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor medication.
